Basic knowledge of first aid has transformed from a useful bonus to a necessary everyday skill. The time it takes for an ambulance to arrive is around ten minutes, and even a person without medical education, if they know the algorithms, is able to withstand this time and keep the victim alive until the medics arrive. There are several proven platforms in Ukraine where you can take free online first aid courses and receive a certificate. Let’s break down where to learn, what programs are available, and which certificate is really valuable.
This refers specifically to free online training with official confirmation. Paid full-time courses with practice on mannequins are a separate and important story, to which online is just the first step. Without live training, it is impossible to fully master cardiopulmonary resuscitation or apply a tourniquet, but the theoretical part of online training provides a foundation that can be built upon later.
What is first aid and why is it worth learning
First aid is emergency actions that a person without special medical education can take at the scene before the arrival of an emergency medical team. The algorithms are approved by the order of the Ministry of Health and cover stopping bleeding, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, actions in case of loss of consciousness, burns, hypothermia, poisoning, fractures, and crisis conditions such as stroke or heart attack.
Modern courses build training on a clear sequence of actions: first, massive bleeding is stopped, then breathing is ensured, and then the heart is worked on. Knowledge of this order is sometimes more important than individual techniques, as it helps not to get confused and act consistently. Ukrainian programs are based on the adapted MARCH algorithm.

Red Cross First Aid Courses
The Ukrainian Red Cross is the oldest and largest humanitarian organization in the country, which systematically engages in first aid training. Its programs are certified by the Global Reference Center of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, so the issued certificate is recognized in 191 countries. This is the most valuable document that can be obtained in Ukraine by a civilian.
The Red Cross offers three certified programs lasting 6, 12, and 48 hours, which consist of separate modules. About 60 percent of the time is devoted to practical skills development. Free training is available to Red Cross employees and volunteers, people with disabilities due to military actions, soldiers of the Armed Forces, National Guard, National Police, and State Emergency Service, as well as children from 3 to 14 years old in the format of masterclasses. For organizations and businesses, courses are paid, and the proceeds go to the statutory activities of the society.
Sign up for training can be done through the Red Cross website or through regional organizations — Kyiv, Kharkiv, Lviv, and others, which have their own schedules.
First Aid Course in Wartime from Prometheus
The Prometheus educational platform, together with the American charitable foundation Nova Ukraine, has developed a free online course “First Aid in Wartime”. The program is built on 15 hours of material, after successful completion, the listener receives a digital certificate signed by the instructor, and teachers are also awarded 0.5 ECTS credits.
The course covers stopping bleeding using tamponade and tourniquets, actions in case of burns, hypothermia, cardiac arrest, and other emergency conditions. It is taught by certified instructors of the FAST company. The program is aimed at both teachers of educational institutions and a wider audience — anyone who wants to master the basics for actions during wartime.

Providing Emergency Medical Care Cycle
Separately on Prometheus, an in-depth cycle of online courses “Providing Emergency Medical Care at the Pre-Hospital Stage” is available, designed primarily for medical workers, but open to all comers. The cycle consists of four parts, after each of which a separate digital certificate is issued, provided that the listener has scored at least 75 percent of correct answers in the final testing.
For medics at the pre-hospital stage, successful completion of the online part opens access to practice at the training departments of regional emergency medical care and disaster medicine centers, after which points are awarded for continuous professional development. This makes the cycle one of the most meaningful free online options in the country.
First Aid Course from EduHub
The EduHub platform offers a short free course “First Aid” in SCORM format. It briefly covers the rules for calling emergency medical care, algorithms for actions in various emergency conditions, and symptoms by which these conditions can be recognized. The algorithms comply with the current order of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.
EduHub is convenient as a starting point for a person who is first encountering the topic: the course does not require prior knowledge, it can be completed relatively quickly, and it provides a basic understanding that can be built upon with more serious programs from the Red Cross or Prometheus.

First Psychological Aid Course from Prometheus
Along with physical trauma, a person in an emergency situation also experiences an acute psychological reaction — and this is also an area where first aid is needed. Prometheus has translated into Ukrainian a course by Professor George Everly of Johns Hopkins University — one of the most famous specialists in crisis psychology. The program is built around the RAPID model: reflective listening, needs assessment, prioritization, intervention, and disposition.
The course is free, and upon completion, a certificate is issued. It does not replace first aid, but complements it — for those who work with victims, refugees, families of military personnel, or simply want to know how to support a loved one after a traumatic event.
Which first aid certificate is more valuable
All of the above courses issue a certificate, but their value is different. The Red Cross certificate is recognized internationally in 191 countries and is most often taken into account by employers, humanitarian organizations, and educational institutions. Prometheus certificates confirm the fact of completing the course and are useful primarily as proof of mastering the theory — for teachers, they also provide ECTS credits. The EduHub certificate is suitable for the basic level and internal reporting within an organization.
For a person who wants to acquire a really functional skill, and not just a piece of paper, the sequence is usually as follows: complete the online theory (Prometheus or EduHub), and then sign up for offline training with practice — best of all in the Red Cross or a specialized school with certified instructors. No video can replace live practice of cardiopulmonary resuscitation on a mannequin.

Questions and Answers
Are these courses really completely free?
Yes. Prometheus and EduHub online courses are free for everyone. Red Cross courses are free for privileged categories: Red Cross volunteers, people with disabilities due to military actions, soldiers of the Armed Forces, National Guard, National Police, and State Emergency Service, as well as children. For businesses and organizations, Red Cross training is paid.
What certificate is issued after completing an online first aid course?
Prometheus and EduHub issue a digital certificate of completion — for Prometheus, you need to score at least 75 percent in the tests. The Red Cross certificate is recognized in 191 countries. Teachers also receive ECTS credits for Prometheus courses.
Can first aid be fully mastered online?
The theoretical part — yes, and this is already better than nothing. However, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, applying a tourniquet, and working with massive bleeding require practical practice on mannequins. An online course should be supplemented with offline training at the Red Cross or a specialized school.
How long does an online first aid course take?
It depends on the program. A short EduHub course can be completed in a few hours. “First Aid in Wartime” from Prometheus is designed for 15 hours. The “Providing Emergency Medical Care at the Pre-Hospital Stage” cycle is the longest and consists of four parts.
