During the shelling of Kyiv on May 24, the Russians damaged several well-known cultural institutions in the capital – the National Art Museum of Ukraine (NAMU), the National Philharmonic, the National Music Academy, the National Center “Ukrainian House”, the National Library named after Yaroslav the Wise, and the Kyiv Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet for Children and Youth, according to the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine.

The National Museum “Chornobyl” also suffered significant damage. Numerous architectural landmarks were damaged, including the Contract House and the Post Office on Podil.

The blast wave from the explosion damaged the building of the National Art Museum. The National Philharmonic had its windows shattered on the side of European Square, and the Ukrainian House had some of its facade windows shattered.

Specialized services are continuing to record the consequences of the attack and assess the scale of the destruction.

According to the Deputy Prime Minister for Humanitarian Policy – Minister of Culture, Tetiana Berezna, this is the largest series of damage to cultural institutions in Kyiv since the start of the full-scale war.

A very difficult night for Ukraine. Numerous Russian missiles and drones attacked the civilian population. While Russians were receiving awards at the Cannes Film Festival, their brothers and sisters were shelling Ukrainian children. It was especially cynical to see Russian artists trying to whitewash themselves by shifting the blame solely to the Russian dictator-president.

The Ministry of Culture continues to gather information about the consequences of the shelling and coordinates interaction with the affected institutions.

In total, due to Russian aggression in Ukraine, 1,783 cultural heritage sites and 2,540 cultural infrastructure objects have been damaged or destroyed.

Of the destroyed and damaged cultural heritage objects, 161 have national significance, 1,460 have local significance, and 162 have been recently discovered. A total of 46 landmarks have been completely destroyed.
