Ukraine submits embroidery tradition to UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage

The Ministry of Culture of Ukraine submitted the tradition of embroidery to UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The nomination dossier “Embroidery in Ukraine: a socio-cultural tradition” was signed and submitted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by the Vice Prime Minister for Humanitarian Policy – Minister of Culture, Tetiana Berezna.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Permanent Representation of Ukraine to UNESCO sent the documents for consideration by the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The tradition of embroidery is one of the most widespread and vibrant forms of intangible cultural heritage in Ukraine. It unites people regardless of age, sex, or social status, preserves cultural continuity, and is passed down from generation to generation – in families, educational institutions, through workshops, festivals, and community initiatives.

The National Museum of Folk Architecture and Life of Ukraine was the initiator of the submission. The Expert Council on Intangible Cultural Heritage, the Institute of Cultural Studies of the National Academy of Arts, the Kyiv State Academy of Decorative and Applied Arts and Design named after Mykhailo Boychuk, and the National Museum in Lviv named after Andriy Sheptytsky were involved in the preparation of the nomination.

Regional centers of folk art – Odesa, Bukovyna, Luhansk, Sumy, specialized departments of the Ternopil and Lviv Regional State Administrations, as well as public organizations “World Embroidery Day” and “Around Us. YuA” also participated in the formation of the dossier.
