Today, May 21, Ukraine celebrates World Embroidery Day, which turns 20 this year.
It all started in Chernivtsi in 2006. Students of the history faculty of the national university agreed to come to classes in embroidered shirts.
There were only a few dozen of them – some did not support the initiative, and some even criticized it. At that time, no one thought that this event would become historic for the country.
Twenty years later, Embroidery Day is celebrated in over a hundred countries around the world.
Embroidery has long been not just about clothes. It’s a symbol, a talisman, and a statement. It’s with us everywhere: in everyday and festive moments, in moments of joy and in days of great tragedy, on the front lines and at home, during revolutions, during farewells with the best people, and even in occupation — as a symbol of quiet resistance.
– Prime Minister of Ukraine Yulia Svyrydenko.
The Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets in his greeting emphasized the regional diversity of the tradition. He noted that in different regions – there are different patterns, but the meaning is the same: love for Ukraine, respect for traditions, and a deep sense of belonging.
World Embroidery Day is celebrated on the third Thursday of May.
