– National Police of Ukraine.
Graphical images of fingerprints can be obtained from a Ukrainian citizen’s ID card and a passport for traveling abroad – a biometric foreign passport. This refers to the same images that the person provided when applying for the relevant document.
The obtained data is placed in the relevant records of the National Police and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and automatically checked for possible matches with fingerprints extracted during work with unidentified bodies. This increases the effectiveness and speed of identification.
The mechanism applies exclusively to biometric documents with an electronic information carrier. Passports of a Ukrainian citizen in the form of a booklet and foreign passports of the old model do not contain an electronic chip, so they cannot be used to obtain fingerprints.
Investigators can contact the relatives of missing persons with a request to provide ID documents for examination and reading. Relatives can also independently apply to the investigator with a request.
After examining and reading the necessary information, the ID document is immediately returned to the family.
