Ukrainian multidisciplinary rehabilitation teams underwent a series of practical trainings and supervisions in neuro-urology to help patients with spinal cord injuries.

The training was conducted in April by Professor Ruth Kirchner-Germanns, a German neuro-urologist and President of the Association for Continence Research and Education (ACRE).

The visit took place within the framework of the project “Establishing a Neuro-Urology Department in Ukraine”, which is being implemented in cooperation with ACRE. The project aims to enhance the capacity of Ukrainian specialists in diagnosing and treating patients with spinal cord injuries, particularly those with neurogenic bladder disorders.

At the Rivne Regional Clinical Hospital in Klevan, a three-day practical training was held for rehabilitation teams from Dnipro and Vinnytsia. The participants learned to:

  • work with urodynamic equipment;
  • prepare patients for examination;
  • conduct basic tests;
  • interpret the results for further treatment and rehabilitation.

The training was conducted using modern urodynamic equipment, which the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has provided to 5 Ukrainian hospitals with the status of clinical multidisciplinary rehabilitation centers of excellence.

In the Ternopil Regional Clinical Psychoneurological Hospital, under the supervision of Professor Kirchner-Germanns, urodynamic examinations were conducted for the first time in the region on three patients with lower urinary tract dysfunction due to spinal cord injuries.

Previously, such conditions were mostly assessed based on clinical presentation, without the possibility of obtaining accurate data.

Also, within the framework of the visit, a deeper cooperation between the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Hospital and ACRE began – the parties signed an agreement on the implementation of educational and clinical programs in the field of urodynamic.

In Ivano-Frankivsk, a two-day training was also held for doctors of physical and rehabilitation medicine, urologists, and medical nurses.

The training took place within the framework of the project “Development of the Rehabilitation Assistance System” – this is a flagship project of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, which is being implemented within the framework of the National Strategy for Creating a Barrier-Free Space.
