Adaptive Sports: A Key Priority for the Ministry of Youth and Sports

On August 20, 2024, a meeting chaired by Matviy Bidny, the Head of the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine, was held. The event, attended by representatives from sports federations, civil society, and veteran communities, focused on the development of adaptive sports.

The Ministry is focused on advancing adaptive sports by creating a network of adaptive clubs and providing conditions for veterans, people with disabilities, and those with limited mobility to engage in sports. Currently, adaptations to the competition rules for sports such as grappling, pankration, strongman, WKC karate, and chess are underway.

The meeting discussed existing experiences and challenges in the field of adaptive sports. Veteran community representatives raised issues regarding barriers and their solutions. Comprehensive national sports events are planned to start in 2025.

The first event of 2024 will be the All-Ukrainian Sports Tournament of the Ukrainian Strongman Federation “Victory of the Unconquered,” scheduled for September 15.

This project is part of the National Strategy for Creating an Accessible Environment, initiated by the First Lady of Ukraine, Olena Zelenska.

We have also reported that UNICEF will provide assistance to over 33,000 families in frontline areas as part of winter preparations.
