On 8 May, Ukraine marks the Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in World War II

On 8 May, Ukraine commemorates the Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in World War II of 1939-1945.

On this day, Ukrainians remember the people whose lives were taken by this war. The date symbolizes the memory of human losses.

Ukraine, along with the international community, marks this day on the anniversary of the signing of the act of capitulation of Nazi Germany.

Russians, however, use this date to exaggerate their own merits in the war and conceal real facts.

On August 23, 1939, Germany and the USSR signed the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact and a secret protocol on the division of Europe. This became one of the prerequisites for the outbreak of World War II.

On June 22, 1941, Ukraine became the main arena of military action. As a result of the war, more than 8 million Ukrainians and representatives of other nations who lived on Ukrainian lands were killed.

In total, World War II claimed the lives of from 50 to 85 million people worldwide.
