The forest fire in the Verkhniy Volovets Forest District in Zakarpattia shows no sign of abating — as of the morning of 6 May, firefighters and foresters are continuing to battle the blaze, which has engulfed around 75 hectares of woodland.
A total of 243 people and 46 pieces of equipment have been deployed to tackle the fire. The State Emergency Service of Ukraine has deployed 138 rescue workers and 36 pieces of equipment. Rescue workers from Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk regions have arrived to assist their Transcarpathian colleagues — a further 58 specialists and 14 pieces of equipment.
Meanwhile, 105 staff members from the Carpathian branch of the State Enterprise ‘Forests of Ukraine’, together with 10 pieces of specialist equipment—a water tanker, six firefighting modules and three support vehicles—are working at the scene. The State Emergency Service plans to deploy aircraft to assist with aerial firefighting.
The fire in the Verkhniy Volovets Forestry is one of the largest forest fires in Zakarpattia in 2025. The spring season is traditionally considered the most dangerous due to dry grass, the absence of foliage and wind — it is these factors that contribute to the rapid spread of fire in the Carpathians.
Firefighting operations are ongoing.
