Ukrzaliznytsia has upgraded its passenger carriages, with changes affecting power supply systems, safety and amenities for passengers travelling with children, the company has said.
The first refurbished carriages have been carrying passengers for almost a week. The main batch is still on its way and is expected before the summer season.
The key upgrade in the comfort category is an improved storage battery. It allows the train crew to bring the compartment to a comfortable temperature before passengers board, while the carriage is waiting at the station without an external power supply.
Thanks to the new battery, air conditioners, refrigerators, microwave ovens and vacuum toilets can operate for an extended period independently of locomotive or station power.

In the safety block – surveillance cameras with recording, night vision and motion-sensor activation. The conductor monitors the corridor via screens in the service compartment. Emergency call buttons for the conductor have been installed in compartments and lavatories.
For passengers travelling with children, fold-down seats have been added in the smaller lavatory, and reinforced changing tables in the larger one. The mirror lighting and washing area have been updated, along with the hands-free mechanism for opening the bins. New children’s playpens have been installed in the compartments.
Other changes include touchscreen control of lighting intensity and colour, chessboards on the main table, and an additional individual table with a cup-holder space on each upper berth.
