SNAU and The HALO Trust Join Forces to restore Ukraine’s war-damaged soils

Sumy National Agrarian University (SNAU) and the international organization The HALO Trust have signed an agreement for scientific and technical cooperation, according to the Ministry of Education and Science. The goal of the agreement is to restore soils in areas affected by combat.

Under the agreement, SNAU will conduct soil analysis from affected areas. Based on the results, the university will provide recommendations for further restoration and remediation of these lands. The work will be carried out at the “Laboratory of Ecological Agriculture and Environmental Management,” which is a center for collective use of modern agronomic equipment.

Since the beginning of the war, SNAU has been actively researching and restoring soils impacted by military actions. Much of this research is done in collaboration with the Royal Agricultural University in the UK. SNAU scientists have also received training at the Bern University of Applied Sciences in Switzerland.

The HALO Trust is the largest international organization specializing in landmine and explosive ordnance disposal. It has been working in 30 countries for over 35 years. In Ukraine, the organization has been active since 2015, and its work has become even more crucial following Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. Landmines and other explosive hazards pose a serious threat. The HALO Trust operates in Kyiv, Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Mykolaiv, and Kherson regions, focusing not only on demining but also on training local communities in safety practices regarding explosive remnants of war.

The collaboration between SNAU and The HALO Trust is a significant step towards restoring ecological stability in Ukraine. By combining scientific advancements and demining expertise, these organizations will help to quickly rehabilitate affected areas and ensure their safety for local residents.
