Ukrzaliznytsia has unveiled a new flagship train, Sakura. Its formation includes newly built Ukrainian carriages and modernised ones.

This train is a token of friendship and gratitude to the Japanese people for their systematic support of Ukraine and its railways in particular. It is all the more symbolic that part of the journey will be made on Japanese rails.

Sakura is composed of new carriages manufactured in Ukraine in 2026, along with children’s carriages modernised at Ukrzaliznytsia’s own facilities.

The train will run on route No. 81 Kyiv – Uzhhorod. Both Ukrainian cities burst into bloom in spring with sakura – the flower symbol of Japan.

Twelve of the train’s carriages will feature distinctive sakura petal branding.

Passengers on both train sets will gain access to an online portal dedicated to Japanese culture, architecture and art, while on board they will find elements of Japanese cuisine, board games and Japanese-Ukrainian cultural collaborations.

The project has been implemented with the support of the Embassy of Japan in Ukraine and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
