UN-Habitat works in more than 90 countries to drive transformative changes in cities and settlements through knowledge, policy advice, technical assistance, and collaborative action. The UN-Habitat Strategic Plan for 2020-2030 aims for a more strategic and integrated approach to addressing the challenges and opportunities of 21st-century cities and other settlements. UN-Habitat’s mission encompasses four key roles: think, act, share, and collaborate.

History
UN-Habitat was established in 1978 at the United Nations Conference on Human Settlements in Vancouver, Canada. The programme was officially created in 1979 and later relocated to Nairobi, Kenya. In 1996, at the Second United Nations Conference on Human Settlements in Istanbul, the programme’s goals were reaffirmed and expanded. In 2001, the programme was officially reorganized as the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) with an expanded mandate and new functions.
