Its purpose is to provide leadership and encourage partnership in environmental matters, aiming to improve the quality of life for nations and peoples without compromising future generations. At its nineteenth session in February 1997, the UNEP Governing Council adopted the Nairobi Declaration, redefining UNEP’s role as the leading global environmental authority. According to the declaration, UNEP is tasked with setting the global environmental agenda, promoting the integration of environmental aspects into sustainable development within the UN system, and being a leading advocate for global environmental interests.
