The Dovzhenko Film Studio has become a European cinematic treasure

The Oleksandr Dovzhenko Film Studio in Kyiv has been included in the list of treasures of European film culture. The decision was taken by the European Film Academy, which compiles a list of iconic locations of exceptional significance for the development of cinema in Europe.

This is one of the oldest film studios in Eastern Europe, founded in 1927. It became a hub for Ukrainian auteur cinema and a platform for the creation of films that influenced the global cinematic language. It was here that directors whose works defined the aesthetics of 20th-century Ukrainian and European cinema worked.

Inclusion on the list signifies official recognition of the studio’s historical and cultural value at an international level. Such sites are regarded as part of a shared European heritage that must be preserved and promoted.

The Dovzhenko Film Studio has weathered several historical periods — from the Soviet era to independent Ukraine. Over the years, feature films, documentaries and animated films were produced here, winning awards at international festivals. Today, the studio continues to operate, though it faces challenges related to funding, infrastructure maintenance and the development of modern production.

The European Film Academy emphasises that such decisions are aimed at supporting cultural memory and drawing attention to locations that have shaped the history of cinema. The inclusion of the Ukrainian film studio on this list also reflects the growing interest in Ukrainian culture within a European context.
