On 30 April, VDNG will present the findings of a year-long research project examining the place that the complex’s Soviet heritage may hold in Ukrainian culture. The presentation of the “(NON)exhibition” project will take place in central Pavilion No. 1.
This is the result of a year-long study by the Expocentre, in which experts analysed international approaches to working with “difficult heritage” and explored possible strategies for its reinterpretation.

The project also includes a separate visual study of the VDNG grounds by photographer Dmytro Prutkin, which will likewise be presented during the event.
The research was carried out by curators of the Past / Future / Art memory culture platform and researchers from the Centre for Human Rights and Memorialisation of War at the Kyiv School of Economics.
The mission of VDNG is to be a model of a better future for Ukraine. But this is only possible through an honest and thorough reflection on the past. The research should help us answer key questions about the role of VDNG in cultural heritage and its further development as a modern cultural and educational space.

During the event, visitors will also see Soviet-era panels in the foyer of Pavilion No. 1 for the first time – they had previously been closed off. Among their authors are Ukrainian artists Valerii Lamakh, Ivan Lytovchenko and Oleksandr Atsmanchuk.
The presentation will be followed by a public discussion, “(NON)exhibition. Is there a place for Soviet VDNG in Ukraine’s cultural heritage?”.
