From 25 April, Ukrzaliznytsia is introducing dynamic pricing for premium-segment tickets, the company has announced.
The new rules apply only to SV (luxury) carriages and first-class seats on Intercity trains for domestic routes. Fares for second class, compartment and open-plan carriages remain unchanged – the state has not revised them since 2021.
The price of premium tickets will depend on four factors:
- Season. During off-peak months, when trains are 70-80% full, tickets will be cheaper. During peak months, such as August, they will be more expensive.
- Day of the week. The lowest prices will be on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and the highest on Fridays and Sundays.
- How far in advance tickets are booked. According to Ukrzaliznytsia, nearly 30% of passengers buy tickets on the day of travel or two days before it. Tickets will be cheaper if bought in advance.
- Train occupancy. If a train is 90–100% full, ticket prices will be higher. On services where seats are still available before departure, prices will be reduced.
Dynamic pricing is a global practice used not only by railway operators but also by taxi services and airlines. The new rules will apply to less than 10% of passengers, who travel in the premium segment, while the rules for everyone else remain unchanged.
