The Ministry of Culture of Ukraine has updated the procedure for granting settlements historical status.
The changes, approved by the Cabinet of Ministers, are intended to make the process clearer and more transparent.
We have updated the rules under which settlements can obtain historical status. Communities now have a clear set of criteria and an understandable procedure – from submitting documents to making a decision.

The updated procedure for recognising a settlement as historical предусматриває:
- clear conditions for including settlements in the List of Historic Places of Ukraine;
- a defined set of criteria for granting the status;
- a clear list of required documents;
- a recommendation for local authorities to prepare scientific and planning documentation within a year to define the boundaries and regulations for the use of historical areas.
The Ministry coordinated these changes with regional and the Kyiv City military administrations. It is noted that their implementation does not require additional state budget expenditures.
The government has also updated the names of settlements in the List of Historic Places of Ukraine in line with renaming decisions and replaced the abbreviation “urban-type settlement” with “settlement” following the enactment of the new law on administrative-territorial structure.
