What’s Essential to Include in an Emergency Kit and First Aid Kit?

In the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine, it is crucial to be prepared for any emergency situations. A go-bag and a first aid kit are key elements of preparation that can significantly ease your conditions in crisis situations.

A go-bag allows you to quickly and organizedly leave a dangerous area. It contains important documents, communication tools, food, hygiene items, and other essential things that may be critically important in the absence of access to usual resources. So, what should be in a go-bag? Specialists from UNICEF explain.

Go-Bag for Adults:

  • Original and copies of documents, cash, keys
  • Phone, charger, power bank
  • Flashlight, batteries
  • Radio receiver and mechanical watch
  • Whistle
  • Multi-tool, tape
  • Spare clothes and shoes
  • Hygiene items, first aid kit
  • Long-lasting food, water

Go-Bag for Children:

  • Copies of documents and a bracelet with the child’s details and parent’s contacts
  • Family photo
  • Spare set of clothes, underwear, and shoes
  • Power bank
  • Flashlight and batteries
  • Water, snacks, baby food
  • Medications that the child regularly takes
  • Favorite toy, notebook, pencils or markers

Go-Bag for Pets:

  • Documents
  • Name tag, leash, muzzle, carrier
  • Food, water, and medications
  • Favorite toy

Basic First Aid Kit for a Family with a Child:

  • Fever-reducing/pain-relieving medication: paracetamol or ibuprofen (syrup for children and tablets for adults)
  • Decongestant nasal drops for children or spray for adults
  • Rehydration solutions
  • Non-alcoholic antiseptic (e.g., chlorhexidine)
  • Antihistamines: oral (syrup, drops) and topical (ointment, gel)
  • Eye wash drops
  • Cotton wool, cotton buds, and sponges
  • Scissors, tweezers, disposable gloves, liquid soap
  • Cooling pack
  • Gauze bandage (5 cm wide)
  • Gauze pads
  • Adhesive bandages, waterproof and bactericidal, in various shapes and sizes
  • Sterile syringes of different volumes
  • Consult your doctor or healthcare provider for additional medications
