EU Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson has stated that the coming winter will be significantly more difficult for Ukrainians than the previous one. Due to shelling and hostilities, Ukraine has lost half of its energy capacity. According to her, the destroyed energy infrastructure has caused irreparable damage, equivalent to the peak consumption of Portugal, a country with a population of over 10 million.
Simson urged Ukraine’s allies to intensify their assistance, warning of a potential humanitarian catastrophe. During the winter months, Ukraine faces the risk of losing access to basic services such as water supply, sewage, and heating, which could make some areas uninhabitable. The most affected will be the elderly, children, and vulnerable segments of the population.
The Commissioner emphasized that 500 million euros have already been raised for energy sector support and stressed the need for increased assistance. She suggested repairing damaged facilities, installing decentralized generators, deploying solar systems, increasing electricity exports from Europe, and strengthening the protection of energy infrastructure.
Kadri Simson also called on governments, companies, and citizens to make donations to the Energy Support Fund for Ukraine and support the country during this critical period.
We have already reported that the personal composition of the Council for the Recovery of the NDSL Okhmatdyt has been formed.
