From 1 September 2026, English will become a compulsory subject in kindergartens

From 1 September 2026, learning English in preschool institutions will become mandatory for all children aged 5–6. This was reported by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, referring to the provisions of the new Law on Preschool Education.

To organise foreign language teaching in kindergartens, a position of English teacher will be introduced. The staffing calculation provides for 0.25 of a full-time post per group of older preschool children.

Future educators will have access to a Methodical Guide containing practical recommendations for planning and conducting English lessons in senior kindergarten groups.

It is noted that professional development for teachers will be provided through a national online platform created by the Ministry of Education and Science.

The platform’s content was developed in cooperation with the British Council and Cambridge University Press & Assessment.

The specialised section “Preschool Educators” contains five methodological sections and 49 learning materials with a total duration of 30 hours, adapted to the age characteristics of preschool children and focused on practical application.
