Ukraine may introduce four months of additional paid leave for parents

Key points

  • The Verkhovna Rada Committee recommended adopting a new Labour Code with additional leave for parents.
  • The additional paid leave will be four months, two months for each parent.
  • The leave can be used in parts, simultaneously or alternately.
  • Single parents will be entitled to the full leave period.
  • The current three-year maternity leave and job security guarantees will remain in place.

The Committee of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on Social Policy and Veterans’ Rights has recommended adopting as a basis the draft of the new Labour Code, which provides an additional four months of paid parental leave until a child reaches eight years of age.

Each parent will be entitled to two months of the additional leave, which can be taken in parts, simultaneously, or consecutively.

Single parents will have the right to the full duration of this leave.

The existing three-year parental leave remains in place with a guarantee of job retention, and the new four-month leave is provided as an additional benefit.

The draft law does not change state assistance for childbirth or other social benefits. All current guarantees remain, including the possibility of unpaid leave until the child reaches three and six years of age at the family’s discretion.

The Labour Code draft is registered under number 14386 and was initiated by the Cabinet of Ministers.
