A monument to Lesya Ukrainka has been erected in Hungary

On 25 February, a monument to Ukrainian poet and writer Lesya Ukrainka was unveiled in the Hungarian city of Hódmezővásárhely to mark the 155th anniversary of her birth. The announcement was made by Ukraine’s Ambassador to Hungary, Fedir Shandor, during a broadcast of Suspilne Studio.

The sculpture was installed in a new city square on the joint initiative of the Embassy of Ukraine in Hungary and the city’s mayor, Péter Márki-Zay.

The monument was entirely produced in Ukraine and financed by the Embassy of Ukraine in Hungary.

According to the ambassador, the space was created as a gathering place for the Ukrainian community in the region.

It was noted that the city’s mayor, local residents and Ms Ariadna, a direct relative of Lesya Ukrainka who lives in Hungary, attended the unveiling ceremony.
