Diia.Education launched a series on how to properly support people after their release from captivity

A practical educational series titled “Do No Harm: Support After Release from Captivity” has been released on the Diia.Education platform. It focuses on providing assistance to people after their return from captivity.

The series consists of 10 episodes and is designed for relatives, colleagues, professionals and community representatives who interact with people who have experienced captivity.

The project was created within the framework of the nationwide mental health programme “How Are You?”, an initiative of First Lady Olena Zelenska.

Its aim is to help society build appropriate, safe and professional support for those who have experienced captivity, as well as to prevent stigmatisation and re-traumatisation.

During the series, viewers will learn:

  • how to support a person in the first days after release, help restore their sense of safety and build interaction without pressure or intrusive questioning;
  • how to navigate the post-isolation support system and know where to turn for medical, psychological, social and legal assistance;
  • how to recognise signs of anxiety or traumatic stress and how to appropriately recommend seeking professional help;
  • how to create a “resource bank” and a support network within the community.

The series also includes a separate section dedicated to those who help others. It covers tools for self-care, peer support and the prevention of professional burnout.

Ukrainian military psychologists, post-isolation support specialists and people who have survived captivity contributed to the project. Among them:

  • are military psychologist and logotherapist, Major of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Olena Sek;
  • veteran and Chief Veterans Partner at Starlight Media Hlib Stryzhko;
  • post-isolation support officer of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Danylo Kravets;
  • military psychologist Yuliia Yevstratova;
  • psychologist Hanna Mokrousova;
  • clinical psychologist Tetiana Sirenko;
  • head of the mobile volunteer group of combat resilience psychologists Olena Kurta.
