The BCG vaccine is intended to protect children against severe forms of tuberculosis, including tuberculous meningitis and miliary tuberculosis.
The vaccination is included in the National Immunisation Schedule and is administered in medical facilities 24 hours after a child’s birth. If the vaccination was not carried out in the maternity hospital, it can be given by a paediatrician or family doctor. All vaccinations under the Schedule are free of charge.
Tuberculosis is transmitted through airborne droplets when a person carrying tuberculosis bacteria coughs or sneezes.
