In 2025, Ukraine recorded an increase in marriages and a decline in divorces, according to data from OpenDataBot.
Over the course of the year, 165,587 new marriages were registered in the country. At the same time, 124,785 couples officially ended their marriages, which is 12% fewer than in 2024.
The statistics indicate a shift in the trend: currently, there are 7 divorces for every 10 newly formed families. By comparison, in 2024 the numbers of new and dissolved marriages were almost equal, while in 2021 the ratio stood at 10 marriages to 6 divorces.
Most divorces in Ukraine take place through the courts. Last year, courts issued 98,503 divorce rulings, which is 9% fewer than the previous year.
Through the civil registration offices, 26,282 divorces were processed – a figure that decreased by 23%.
The number of new marriages increased by 10% and, for the first time, exceeded the 2022 figures. Growth was recorded in three regions: Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk region and Lviv region.
Every fourth marriage was registered in the capital, with 37,898 ceremonies. This is 1.8 times more than in 2024 and 1.5 times more than before the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
In the Dnipropetrovsk region, 19,151 marriages were registered, while 13,325 couples married in the Lviv region. In both regions, the number rose by approximately one third.
A significant decline in marriages was recorded in the frontline Donetsk region, down by 40%. Fewer weddings also took place in the Cherkasy and Rivne regions.
Last year, 2,773 couples entered into marriage contracts and had them certified by notaries. The figure remained at the 2024 level, but was a third lower than in 2021.
Talina Kravtsova, partner at the law firm Asters, notes that prenuptial agreements are often concluded by long-married couples, particularly during periods of family crisis.
At such times, spouses seek to formalise property arrangements in order to avoid potential claims, legal disputes and related pressure in the future. At the same time, prenuptial agreements are gradually gaining popularity among couples who are only planning to marry.

According to her, a prenuptial agreement must take into account the interests of both parties. If the document stipulates that all property belongs solely to one spouse, a court may declare it invalid.
