The European Parliament has adopted a resolution confirming that transgender women are women, according to PinkNews.
The document was approved ahead of the 70th annual session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, which is set to take place in March 2026 in New York.
The text stresses the importance of fully recognising transgender women as women and underlines that their inclusion is essential for effective gender equality policies and efforts to combat violence.
The resolution also calls for the creation of a comprehensive tool to monitor and respond to democratic backsliding and the rollback of women’s rights, as well as to acknowledge the rise in attacks on women’s rights activists and members of the LGBTQ+ community.
The measure was supported by 340 Members of the European Parliament, with 141 voting against and 68 abstaining. Although the resolution is not legally binding, it sets out the political priorities of the European Union in the fields of human rights and gender policy.
Journalist Erin Reed noted that the adoption of the document could heighten tensions between the EU and the United States, where, following the return to power of President Donald Trump, the situation regarding LGBTQ+ rights has deteriorated.
