The Cabinet of Ministers has adopted a resolution launching a pilot project to provide medical and psychological services to veterans experiencing disorders related to the use of psychoactive substances, including alcohol. The Ministry for Veterans Affairs of Ukraine announced the decision.

The state will fund treatment for programme participants aimed at restoring health, stabilising their psycho-emotional condition and supporting their return to full and active lives.

The programme provides for a combination:

  • medical, psychological, psychiatric and social support;
  • the establishment of a structured system for treating addictions among veterans with the subsequent development of a unified model for delivering such services across Ukraine;
  • provision of broader information to veterans and their families about addiction disorders and available support options.

Support will consist of three stages:

  • the first stage is inpatient treatment lasting 30 days and includes individual and group psychotherapy, work with social workers, physical activity, informational sessions, as well as pharmacological and nutritional support;
  • the second stage is outpatient treatment lasting 30 days, during which individual and group psychotherapy sessions will be held once a week;
  • the third stage is long-term outpatient support lasting 280 days and includes weekly group therapy to consolidate treatment results and prevent relapse.

Medical and psychological support services may be provided by healthcare institutions regardless of their form of ownership, as well as by sole traders who have the necessary professional staff and infrastructure.

The Ministry for Veterans Affairs of Ukraine will reimburse the cost of the services provided.

The Ministry for Veterans Affairs noted that further details regarding participation in the programme and the application procedure will be announced separately.
