The number of drunk drivers has decreased for the first time in 5 years – OpenDataBot

Key points:

In 2025, the National Police of Ukraine issued more than 138,000 reports for drunk driving. This is the first decrease in the number of such reports in the last five years, according to data from OpenDataBot analysts.

According to OpenDataBot, the number of reports for driving under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicants decreased by approximately 8% compared to 2024.

Despite the overall downward trend, some regions have seen an increase in drunk driving cases. The largest increases were in Rivne region (+19%), Khmelnytsky region (+18%), Kharkiv region (+8.5%), and Zaporizhzhia region (+3%).

The highest number of reports in 2025 were issued in Dnipropetrovsk region – 13,519 cases, Kharkiv region – 12,095, and Odesa region – 11,543, while the lowest number was recorded in Kherson region – 1,138, in Chernivtsi region – 1,596, and in Ivano-Frankivsk region – 1,897.

Also, in 2025, the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine opened more than 1,000 criminal proceedings for drunk driving. Fifty-nine percent of these cases are pending in court.

Last year, drunk drivers caused 643 traffic accidents resulting in fatalities or injuries. The number of such accidents also decreased by about a third. As a result of these accidents, 73 people were killed and another 857 were injured.

One in every 40 accidents with injuries or fatalities was related to drunk driving, while in 2023 and 2024, this figure was one in every 25 accidents.
