Organ transplants have resumed at Okhmatdyt

The Ministry of Health reports that organ transplants have resumed at the National Children’s Specialized Hospital Okhmatdyt.

Recently, the hospital’s transplant team successfully performed a kidney transplant on 16-year-old Danilo from Kharkiv Oblast, who had lived for many years with chronic kidney disease and was on peritoneal dialysis.

This crucial operation was initially scheduled for early July but had to be postponed due to shelling. After a thorough examination, doctors determined that Danilo’s mother could be his donor.

On July 8, the day of the missile attack, there were 11 children in the hospital’s specialized unit awaiting kidney transplants and 2 children who had received liver transplants. The attack caused significant damage to the operating rooms and laboratories, necessitating the transfer of the young patients to the pediatric ward.

Recovery work at Okhmatdyt has now been completed, including the restoration of operating rooms and ventilation systems, allowing organ transplants to resume. The kidney transplanted to Danilo started functioning immediately during the operation, and he is now undergoing rehabilitation and gaining strength.

Two children who received liver transplants before the attack have successfully completed their rehabilitation and have already returned home. Additionally, after the shelling, the hospital specialists performed 10 more bone marrow transplants at the Kyiv City Center for Nephrology and Dialysis.

We also reported that the first meeting of the Council for the Restoration of the National Children’s Specialized Hospital Okhmatdyt took place.
