UNESCO and Japan have signed an agreement to provide USD 3.8 million for the implementation of the organization’s cultural, educational, and informational initiatives in Ukraine. This was reported by the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine.
With this new financial contribution, Japan’s total assistance to Ukraine will amount to USD 29.1 million, which is about 40% of all funds raised through UNESCO to support Ukraine.
Thanks to the additional funding, UNESCO will continue and expand its support to Ukraine in the areas of culture, education, and access to information.
The organization will strengthen the monitoring of damage to cultural heritage sites using satellite imagery and on-site inspections, which will enable a faster response and stabilization and restoration work. There are also plans to develop policies and regulatory decisions to integrate cultural heritage into the country’s recovery plans.
UNESCO will pay particular attention to supporting journalists and media professionals, developing media and information literacy, and strengthening the education system with a focus on a safe and inclusive learning environment.
According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Culture, the amount of funding raised by UNESCO for its work in Ukraine has already exceeded USD 75 million.
