The Heart Institute of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine performed heart surgery on a newborn baby weighing only 1,100 grams.
The infant, who was born with a critical congenital heart defect, was delivered to the capital on February 3, 2026, from the Poltava Perinatal Center.
Doctors note that heart surgery in children with such low weight is extremely difficult due to the extreme fragility of the tissues. Each surgical intervention required maximum precision and coordinated work by cardiac surgeons, anesthesiologists, and neonatologists.
The tissues are so thin that they resemble wet parchment.

According to doctors, despite the high risks, the operation was successful and the patient’s condition is stable. The infant will undergo further recovery and rehabilitation at the Poltava Perinatal Center.
