Key points:
- Ukraine may allow marriage from the age of 14 in exceptional circumstances.
- This provision is proposed in the draft of the new Civil Code of Ukraine.
- The current marriage age is 18, with the possibility of lowering it to 16 through the courts.
- The changes must go through the full legislative process.
Ukraine is considering legislative changes that could allow marriage from the age of 14 under certain conditions.
This proposal is contained in the draft of the new Civil Code of Ukraine, where Chapter 94, Article 1478 provides for the possibility of marriage by minors in exceptional circumstances, in particular in the case of pregnancy or the birth of a child.
Current Ukrainian legislation sets the general marriage age at 18, but the Family Code allows marriage from the age of 16 by court decision if it is in the interests of the minor.
At present, the initiative to lower the minimum age of marriage is only at the stage of a legislative proposal and must go through all stages of consideration, including discussion and voting in the Verkhovna Rada.
