Today, 22 January, Ukraine celebrates Unity Day, an annual public holiday that draws attention to key events in Ukrainian history. On this day in 1919, the Act of Unification between the Ukrainian People’s Republic and the West Ukrainian People’s Republic was proclaimed on St. Sophia Square in Kyiv, effectively uniting the historically divided parts of Ukrainian lands into a single state. This historic moment became one of the fundamental symbols of Ukrainian statehood.
The date is also associated with the proclamation of full independence of the Ukrainian People’s Republic in 1918, when the IV Universal of the Central Council declared Ukraine’s sovereignty for the first time in the 20th century.
Unity Day not only draws attention to historical events of a century ago, but also serves as a reminder of the importance of territorial, social and cultural unity. In various regions of the country and abroad, themed events, public meetings and cultural initiatives are held on this day to emphasise the importance of unity in modern Ukrainian society.
