The State Prepares New Rules to Protect Traditional Crafts and Intellectual Property

Ukraine is strengthening legislative tools to protect the intellectual property of folk craft masters. Work is underway to update the legislation, which aims to simplify interactions with state institutions and secure the rights of artisans.

“An essential step is the development of a legislative framework. I would like to mention the draft law ‘On Folk Arts and Crafts’, which is currently being worked on. It proposes a system for registering artisans, creating a registry, improving the procedures for granting this status, and ensuring more transparent interactions with state institutions,” said Olena Orlyuk, head of the Ukrainian National Office of Intellectual Property and Innovations (Ukrainian IP Office / IP Office), in an interview with ZN.ua, reports Humanitarian Media Hub.

At the same time, further changes are being prepared in the field of intellectual property. These will concern copyright, designs, and geographical indications.

The Ukrainian National Office of Intellectual Property and Innovations (Ukrainian IP Office / UKRNOIVI) is a state institution designated by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine to act as the National Intellectual Property Authority.

The office was established as part of an institutional reform of the intellectual property system, formalized by law and government decisions. Since November 8, 2022, UKRNOIVI has operated as the sole state authority providing a full range of intellectual property services.

The IP Office has become a “one-stop” platform for creators, inventors, entrepreneurs, and businesses. It provides expertise on industrial property applications, registration of intellectual property rights, maintenance of state registries, and advisory support in the field.

In addition to basic procedures, UKRNOIVI develops information services, international cooperation, educational programs, and innovation support. Its goal is not only to protect rights but also to promote the commercialization of ideas, attract investors, and develop Ukraine’s innovation ecosystem.

The IP Office is also actively working on new tools, such as a Mediation Center for resolving intellectual property disputes, and supports government priorities in business development, technology, and transparent investment processes.

The organization maintains regular communication with international intellectual property bodies and is a key player in shaping a modern legal and institutional IP system in Ukraine.
