The mission of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is to work on the protection of all human rights; to help empower individuals to realize their rights and to assist people in securing the enforcement of those rights.

As the principal United Nations body for promoting and protecting human rights, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR):

• Collaborates with states and provides assistance to help them fulfill their human rights obligations.
• Identifies cases of human rights violations around the world.
• Serves as a forum for exchanging views, analyzing, and responding to contemporary human rights issues.
• Coordinates the conduct of research in the field of human rights, as well as educational, awareness-raising, and informational activities.
• Partners with numerous stakeholders to expand support for human rights worldwide.

History:
The United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine was established in 2014. It currently operates at the invitation of the Government of Ukraine, focusing on monitoring, reporting, and advocating regarding the human rights situation in the country, with particular attention to the conflict in eastern Ukraine and the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, as well as the city of Sevastopol, which is occupied by the Russian Federation.
Since February 24, 2022, when the Russian Federation launched its armed aggression against Ukraine, the Monitoring Mission has been closely monitoring the impact of ongoing events on the realization of human rights throughout the country.
