Ukrainian language to be introduced as second foreign language in Vienna schools

Key points:

  • Ukrainian is planned to be taught in Vienna schools from September 2026.
  • The subject will be offered as a second foreign language in secondary schools.
  • Teaching is planned at two educational institutions in Vienna.
  • The decision depends on the number of applications submitted by students.
  • The initiative aims to expand language choices and support Ukrainian identity abroad.

Starting in September 2026, Ukrainian will be taught as a second foreign language in schools in Vienna. This was announced by the Ukrainian Embassy in Austria.

The innovation covers two Viennese secondary schools – BRO: das BORG 3, Landstraßer Hauptstraße 70 and BRW: das GRG15 Diefenbachgasse 19 – and will apply to senior high school students.

The initiative is aimed at students enrolled in Oberstufe, starting in the 5th grade of secondary school, which corresponds to the 9th year of schooling.

Ukrainian language instruction will be implemented provided there are enough applications from students who choose it as a second foreign language. Interest from parents and students will determine whether the subject will be included in the curriculum from the 2026 academic year.

The introduction of Ukrainian in Austrian schools is seen as a step towards supporting the linguistic and cultural identity of Ukrainian children abroad, as well as expanding the choice of languages in the European education system.
