Grant competition announced in Ukraine to strengthen political journalism

The Ukrainian Media and Society Fund (UMSF), operating under Internews Ukraine, has announced a grant competition entitled “Developing Political Journalism to Build a Healthy Democratic Ecosystem in Ukraine”.

This grant initiative, supported by Swiss partners, aims to strengthen the capacity of independent Ukrainian media and non-governmental organisations to cover political processes, promote quality political dialogue and financial sustainability of the media during Russia’s war against Ukraine and in the recovery period.

The competition supports projects that combine coverage of important socio-political topics – from European integration and social cohesion to post-war recovery – with the development of innovative models of sustainable development for the media.

Applicants must:

  • be officially registered in Ukraine as media companies or non-governmental organisations;
  • work in compliance with professional journalism standards;
  • have sufficient editorial and human resources to provide high-quality coverage of political topics;
  • demonstrate the potential to strengthen their financial viability.

Projects must also ensure gender balance, inclusiveness and a professional approach to covering complex topics.

Grant support is provided within the framework of a competition with the possibility of receiving up to UAH 600,000 for the implementation of projects lasting up to 9 months. Project proposals must be submitted by 26 January 2026 in Ukrainian or English to the organisers’ email address, which can be found at the link.
