Train passengers lost more than 20,000 items in 2025

Key points:

  • In 2025, train passengers left behind more than 20,000 items
  • The number of reports of lost items increased by more than 20%
  • Gadgets, clothing, and keys were the most commonly lost items
  • Unusual and rare items were among the finds

In 2025, Ukrainian train passengers increasingly reported lost items. According to Ukrzaliznytsia, 20,861 reports were made to the contact center during the year. This is 21.6% more than the previous year, indicating an increase in passenger traffic and, at the same time, habitual carelessness while traveling.

Most often, passengers could not find their wireless headphones after their trips, and usually only one was lost. Other typical finds included mobile phones, chargers, keys, glasses, jewelry, and clothing items. Sometimes items disappeared without the owners even noticing — passengers left the train confident that they had taken everything they needed.

Some stories had an unexpectedly positive ending. Contact center employees repeatedly helped passengers get in touch with each other when someone accidentally left a shoe or other personal item in a compartment. In such cases, the items were quickly returned to their owners.

Children’s toys were a separate category. Over the course of the year, railway workers returned 522 beloved stuffed animals and figurines to children, which had managed to “travel” on various routes across the country. After such adventures, the toys often became even more valuable to the children.

There were also finds that surprised even experienced railway workers. Among the forgotten items were a saber, a potted flower, a portable refrigerator, a hair dryer, and an avalanche warning signal. Separate cases were recorded when passengers left accessories for pets — bowls, jumpsuits, and light-up collars.

Ukrzaliznytsia reminds passengers that if they lose their belongings, they can contact station staff or leave a message via a mobile app, which has a lost property search system.
