Veterans now have easier access to sports prosthetics

Key points:

  • Veterans can receive sports prostheses free of charge under a state program
  • Proof of participation in competitions is no longer required
  • Sports prostheses are available for training, active lifestyles, and rehabilitation
  • The changes are aimed at equal access and a faster return to activity
  • Applications can be submitted online or offline throughout Ukraine

Ukraine has updated its approach to sports prosthetics for veterans. Under a state program, they can receive a sports prosthesis free of charge not only for participation in competitions, but also for regular training, an active lifestyle, and personal rehabilitation. Additional references or confirmation of sporting activity are no longer required.

Previously, combatants had to confirm their participation in competitions included in state or regional calendars, as well as submit a number of approvals and documents. During the consideration of applications, both medical indications and the availability of prerequisites for sports, in particular sporting experience, were taken into account.

Vitaliy Muzychenko, director of the Social Protection Fund for Persons with Disabilities, explained that changes were adopted in September that abolished the requirement to confirm previous involvement in sports. According to him, this decision significantly simplified access to sports prosthetics and removed barriers for veterans who want to return to physical activity after injuries.

The updated approach is focused on ensuring equal access to sports prosthetics, improving the effectiveness of rehabilitation, supporting social adaptation, and returning veterans to active life. Sports prosthetics are seen as a tool for recovery, not just a means for professional sports.

Applications for free sports prostheses or other rehabilitation aids can be submitted online via the Social Portal of the Ministry of Social Policy or the Electronic Office for Persons with Disabilities. It is also possible to submit a written application regardless of place of residence through administrative service centers, social protection authorities, or regional branches of the Social Protection Fund for Persons with Disabilities. If necessary, the application can be submitted with the help of a fund employee or social worker at the institution where the person is undergoing treatment or rehabilitation.
