Key points:
- The Ministry of Health organised the rapid medical evacuation of the child abroad for treatment.
- The operation was carried out as part of a programme to evacuate Ukrainian citizens so they could access specialised medical care.
- Partnerships with the EU and WHO enable thousands of Ukrainians to receive treatment abroad free of charge.
- Coordination between Ukrainian doctors and foreign clinics saves the lives of the most vulnerable patients.
The Ministry of Health of Ukraine, together with international partners, carried out one of the fastest medical evacuations of a child abroad for further treatment. This unique operation took place as part of a medical evacuation programme coordinated by the Ministry of Health in conjunction with the European Commission, the WHO, and foreign clinics. They have been accepting patients from Ukraine since the start of the full-scale war.
According to the report, the medical evacuation was organised as quickly as possible — only a few hours passed between the medical diagnosis and departure for treatment. The patient required specialised care, which is currently impossible to provide in Ukraine due to limited resources and the destruction of infrastructure. A complex evacuation plan was agreed upon by Ukrainian doctors and foreign partners, involving medical transport and support teams at all stages of the patient’s journey.
This operation was part of the broader Medevac Ukraine programme, a state initiative that allows Ukrainians with severe injuries, cancer and other critical conditions to receive free treatment and rehabilitation in European clinics. Since the war began, thousands of patients have gained access to highly specialised medical care abroad thanks to this cooperation.
Representatives of the Ministry of Health emphasised the importance of such evacuations for preserving the lives and health of the youngest patients. This case confirms the effectiveness of coordination between the Ukrainian side and international partners in the field of medical care during the ongoing war.
