The German government will allocate €20 million in financial aid to support Ukrainian education and critical infrastructure during the winter period. The funds, provided through UNICEF, will enable around 400,000 children in eight regions of Ukraine to continue learning in-person or in hybrid formats despite risks of power and heating outages.
“The support will cover 1,380 schools and preschools, helping them prepare for cold weather and reduce dependence on centralized energy resources. This includes upgrading heating systems, installing backup power supplies, improving building energy efficiency, and creating more comfortable conditions in shelters,” reports Humanitarian Media Hub, citing the website of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine (MES).
Selected educational institutions will receive one-time grants of 420,000 UAH. The list of schools and kindergartens will be compiled by a joint commission involving MES and UNICEF, based on safety and technical criteria. The program targets municipal institutions already operating in-person or in hybrid formats in frontline and border regions.
Part of the funding will also support hospitals and water supply systems, strengthening community resilience overall.
