Medical Refugees, Ukrainian-Style: Why Patients Are Forced to Go Abroad for Medicines

The limited scale of Ukraine’s public procurement market discourages global pharmaceutical companies from registering the latest medicines in the country. As a result, people with rare diseases are left without access to basic treatment, Humanitarian Media Hub reports.

“Patients with achondroplasia or Wilson’s disease are often forced to seek therapy in other countries or turn to illegal schemes,” the Media Hub website states.

The problem is that the cost of unregistered medicines can reach several thousand euros per month. For most families, these amounts are unaffordable, making treatment effectively inaccessible. Children with bone growth disorders, for example, have access to modern therapies in EU countries, but in Ukraine these medicines remain outside the legal framework. As a result, families are forced to choose between risky surgery and seeking help abroad.
