HPV vaccination will become part of the vaccination schedule in 2026

On 1 January 2026, Ukraine will begin routine vaccination against human papillomavirus. This is the first large-scale inclusion of HPV vaccination in the National Preventive Vaccination Calendar, bringing the immunisation system closer to global practice and strengthening the prevention of cancer.

Human papillomavirus remains a key factor in the development of cervical cancer. According to the WHO, almost all cases of this type of cancer are associated with HPV infection. Vaccination has proven effective in preventing infection, and its inclusion in the calendar is an important step in reducing future morbidity.

HPV vaccination programmes are already in place in 149 countries worldwide. More than 80 countries use a single-dose regimen, which demonstrates a high level of immunity formation. Ukraine is also transitioning to this model.

The launch of the programme provides free vaccinations for girls aged 12–13. At this age, the vaccine provides the best protection because it is administered before the onset of sexual activity, when there is no risk of infection. The state is making this group a priority, so access to vaccination will be organised through healthcare facilities across the country.

To launch the campaign, Medical Procurement of Ukraine has purchased a modern 9-valent vaccine. It builds immunity against nine types of the virus, including the highly oncogenic types 16 and 18, which cause about 70% of cervical cancer cases. The use of this drug increases the effectiveness of the state programme and complies with international recommendations.
