Ukrzaliznytsia in partnership with UNICEF has launched its first children’s train carriage

Ukrzaliznytsia, in partnership with UNICEF, launched its first children’s carriage in August. It departed on one of the longest and most popular routes, Kharkiv – Yasinia, as part of train №15/16.

This compartment carriage is adapted for the comfort and safety of families with children of all ages, but it will be especially appealing to children up to 8 years old. Tickets for this carriage can be purchased exclusively through the Ukrzaliznytsia app, where it is marked separately. During boarding, young passengers in the children’s carriage will receive special bracelets indicating their compartment and the contact phone number of their parents.

What makes the carriage special?

  • In the carriage corridor, there are interactive posters, busy boards with moving elements, and child-friendly handrails with soft padding for safe movement.
  • Each compartment is easily identifiable for children, as they are marked with “Superpower Sparks” – characters from a puppet theater created by UNICEF’s Child Fund.
  • Each compartment includes educational and entertainment materials, exercise instructions, a board game, a playpen for the youngest passengers, and an extended upper shelf guard with impact-resistant padding.
  • The restroom is equipped with additional hygiene supplies, a changing table, and special child-sized toilet seat covers.

The design of the children’s carriage incorporates materials from the “Numo” preschool development platform, created by UNICEF experts in Ukraine with support from the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.

The design and major refurbishment, including modernization, took 6 months at Ukrzaliznytsia’s specialized workshop. The basic equipment has been fully updated, including air conditioners, heating systems, and mobile ramps. In 2024, Ukrzaliznytsia, along with its partners, plans to launch 7 more children’s carriages.
