Dnipropetrovsk Region: Shortage of Psychologists, Kindergartens Still Lack Shelters

Communities in the Dnipropetrovsk region face complex needs in psychosocial support, child protection, and education. There is a strong demand for accessible, professional, and free psychological assistance for various population groups: families of military personnel, families with experience of loss or uncertain loss, people in crisis situations, children, and youth.

These findings come from the study “Regional Needs Assessment” conducted by the NGO Ukrainian Educational Platform in cooperation with the network of Support Centers and funded by the Dutch humanitarian organization Kerk in Actie. The research was carried out in October–November 2025.

Overall conclusions regarding Dnipropetrovsk communities indicate a significant shortage of certified specialists, including speech therapists, audiologists, and experts in trauma and violence. There is also a clear need for specialized psychological, informational, and legal support for families of military personnel, missing persons, and veterans, as well as spaces for group interaction and peer support.

In the area of child protection, key needs include safe leisure spaces (including during shelter stays), accessible psychological assistance and corrective support, and family accompaniment for those in difficult life circumstances. The study also highlights the demand for youth centers, hubs, and programs for psychological reintegration after prolonged isolation and war-related stress.

Educational needs focus on equipping shelters—especially in preschools—as a prerequisite for the operation of kindergartens and schools, ensuring stable electricity for in-person and remote learning, and providing technical equipment for schools. There is also a demand for systematic bullying prevention, enhanced psychological and socio-pedagogical support in schools, supervision and burnout prevention programs for teachers, extracurricular development, and comprehensive strengthening of support systems for children with special educational needs.
