Key points:
- 46.2% of Ukrainians have limited their consumption of news about the war.
- The main factors are oversaturation, repetitive content, and emotional exhaustion.
- Information fatigue is structural in nature, due to the excessive number of national stories.
- Local media offering relevant content for communities is growing in importance.
- The editorial staff is refocusing on quality and the needs of different audiences.
The conscious avoidance of news among Ukrainians is growing. A new study by the Media Development Foundation shows that 46.2% of respondents in the last six months of 2025 partially or completely limited their consumption of news about the war.
One of the most common causes of fatigue was information overload. 54% of respondents said they receive much more news than they can process, and 58% felt tired because of repetitive materials. In addition, 51% experienced emotional exhaustion after news stories, and 49% felt hopeless.
Дослідження вказує на структурний характер явища. Національні медіа часто продукують однорідний новинний потік, що створює ефект перенасичення та знижує готовність аудиторії сприймати нову інформацію.
Against this backdrop, interest in local media is growing. Regional newsrooms offer content that has practical relevance to the community, and make the presentation more personalised and context-sensitive. Such materials are more likely to hold the attention of readers.
The downward trend in consumption of military news and interest in local stories indicates that newsrooms need to change their approach to work. The emphasis is shifting to less but better quality content and more attention to the information needs of different audience groups.
