Vision for Ukraine doctors help soldiers restore their faces after injuries

Key points:

  • The Vision for Ukraine mission performs reconstructive surgery for Ukrainians with severe facial injuries.
  • They use 3D printing, microvascular and oculoplastic surgery.
  • Over two years, more than 130 injured military personnel and civilians have received assistance.
  • Doctors from the US and Ukraine are working together, sharing technology and experience.
  • Patients receive customised titanium implants created using CT scans.
  • After Kyiv, the mission will continue its work in Lviv, where children will receive assistance.

A team of American and Ukrainian surgeons is continuing the Vision for Ukraine medical mission, which provides reconstructive surgery using 3D printing and microvascular surgery to patients with severe facial injuries. Specialists have already provided about 40 consultations and are preparing 30 complex interventions for injured Ukrainian military and civilians who have lost eyeballs or suffered bone structure damage as a result of the war.

Vision for Ukraine brings together oculoplastic, microvascular, and maxillofacial surgeons who work together to provide patients with access to the most advanced techniques. In two years, the mission has enabled more than 130 people to receive high-tech care. This year, the team is working in Kyiv for the fourth time, restoring soft tissues, performing microvascular transplants and installing custom implants.

Ukrainian ophthalmic surgeons work side by side with their American colleagues — Jorge Corona, Stuart Seiff, Patrick Carpenter, and John Frodel. Specialists are mastering techniques that allow them to perform complex reconstructions in Ukraine and reduce the need for patients to seek treatment abroad. This strengthens the national healthcare system and speeds up the return of wounded soldiers to rehabilitation.

Military patients receive free personalized titanium 3D implants, which are created using individual CT models. This approach helps restore facial shape, ensure a precise fit, and reduce the number of subsequent operations.

After completing their work in Kyiv, the Vision for Ukraine team will travel to Lviv, where on 4–5 December, specialists will help children affected by the war.
