Today, Ukraine marks an important date — Dignity and Freedom Day. November 21 marks two key moments in the country’s recent history: the beginning of the Orange Revolution in 2004 and the start of the Revolution of Dignity in 2013-14.
The holiday was established by a decree of the President of Ukraine on 13 November 2014 with the aim of affirming the values of freedom, dignity and democracy, as well as honouring civic courage. In the current circumstances, when the country is defending its independence, the day takes on even deeper meaning as an affirmation of human rights and civic position.
Themed events are held in cities across the country on this day — exhibitions, discussions, cultural events — with the aim of reminding people of historical events, encouraging them to preserve memory and realise their responsibility for the future. Attention is also paid to young people, who on this day learn about the roots of civic change and what dignity and freedom mean in the modern Ukrainian context.
