UNDP has opened a new intake of veterans for a mine action course

The United Nations Development Programme has announced the start of another recruitment drive for veterans to train in mine action. The project is being implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Economy, Environment and Agriculture, the Ministry of Veterans Affairs, the Kharkiv Mine Action Coordination Centre, and with the support of the governments of the Netherlands and Luxembourg. The initiative aims to train specialists who will be able to work in communities in the Kharkiv region, one of the most dangerous areas due to unexploded ordnance.

The training will include non-technical survey of territories and informing the population about the risks of mine danger. The programme will last three weeks and will combine theory, fieldwork, safety training and work with digital tools, including IMSMA Core and Survey123. After completing the course, participants will be able to officially work for a year in teams that carry out non-technical surveys and work with communities.

First Deputy Minister of Economy, Environment and Agriculture Ihor Bezkaravaynyi noted that the new stage of training will be the most targeted. He stressed that the work of non-technical survey specialists is key to determining the level of contamination of territories and reducing risks among civilians. According to him, the participation of veterans in the project will help speed up the clean-up of affected areas and improve people’s safety.

Forty veterans will be selected to participate, forming ten non-technical survey teams. The organisers emphasise that all motivated candidates are invited to participate, including veterans with disabilities.
